Overview of the Self-Employed Class
Canada’s Self-Employed Persons Program is designed for individuals with experience in cultural or athletic fields who intend to become self-employed in Canada. This immigration pathway is ideal for artists, performers, athletes, and others who can make a significant contribution to Canadian society through their talents and professional activities.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the Self-Employed Class, applicants must:
- To qualify, applicants must:
- Have at least two years of relevant experience within the five years before applying. This may include:
- Self-employment in cultural or athletic activities, or
- Participation at a world-class level in cultural or athletic events
- Intend and be able to become self-employed in Canada
- Demonstrate a willingness and ability to contribute meaningfully to Canada’s cultural or athletic life
Selection Criteria
The Self-Employed Class operates on a points-based system, where applicants are assessed on the following criteria:
- Experience: Up to 35 points are awarded for relevant experience.
- Education: Up to 25 points based on the applicant’s highest level of completed education.
- Age: Up to 10 points depending on the applicant's age at the time of application, with higher points awarded to those of prime working age.
- Language Proficiency: Up to 24 points for proficiency in English and/or French.
- Adaptability: Up to 6 points based on factors such as spouse’s education, previous work experience in Canada, or having close relatives in Canada.
While the minimum qualifying score is 35, competitive applicants typically exceed this threshold significantly.
Application Process
- Document Preparation: Applicants must prepare a comprehensive application, including proof of experience, education, language ability, and intent to contribute to the Canadian economy through self-employment.
- Application Submission: Once the application is complete, it is submitted to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for processing.
- Medical, Security, and Background Checks: Applicants and their dependents will undergo medical and security checks to confirm admissibility to Canada.
