Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship
Sponsor parents or grandparents through the lottery-based PGP program.
Bringing Parents and Grandparents to Canada
The Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents for PR in Canada. This program operates on a lottery basis due to the high volume of applications, making it crucial to submit a complete and accurate application if selected.
Eligibility Requirements for Sponsors
To sponsor a parent or grandparent, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old and a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
- Meet specific income requirements, showing the financial ability to support the family members.
- Provide Notices of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for the last three taxation years.
Undertaking Period
Sponsors are required to sign an undertaking to provide financial support for the sponsored parents or grandparents. This undertaking obligates sponsors to repay any provincial social assistance received by the sponsored family member during this period.
Application Process for Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship
- Expression of Interest — Each year, IRCC opens a window for Canadian citizens and permanent residents to express their interest in sponsoring their parents or grandparents by submitting an online form.
- Lottery Selection — IRCC randomly selects potential sponsors and issues Invitations to Apply (ITA). Only those who receive an ITA can proceed with the full sponsorship application.
- Submit Sponsorship Application — Once invited, sponsors must complete the application forms, provide proof of income, and submit supporting documents within the allotted timeframe.
Alternative Options: Super Visa
Due to limited spots in the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship program, the Super Visa offers an alternative for family reunification. This visa allows parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for up to five years at a time, with multiple entries permitted over a 10-year period. Lev Law assists families in choosing between the Super Visa and the sponsorship pathway, depending on eligibility and priorities.
